"The Disease that brought me to my knees"
"Blood, Sweat and Tears" Tears for Fears

When people hear the word HIV/Aids the first thing that usually comes to mind is DEATH! Even though death is the horrible side effect of the disease, science today, along with Doctors, Nurses, and Pharmaceutical companies have lightened the load of this terrible sickness. With new types of medicines, treatment, counseling, nutritionists for confidence boosters (to say the least), these professionals have dedicated virtually their lives. They're humanitarians that have given us otherwise "doomed" people living with this disease help, hope, happier lives to live 5-10-15 years longer to see our children grow up, and our children's children where 10-15 years ago the life expectancy was 2-10 years. Now people are surviving 25 years! We need more people to accept us. It's the only disease nobody wants to talk about. Come on people. I know that you all have someone you know who has it. With more people to talk about it, (in which communication is knowledge and knowledge is power) we can beat this thing. It's just one of life's challenges like any other disease. We conquered polio, diphtheria, measles, rheumatic fever, and how many cancer survivors. I know people think it's a degenerative-ill gotten-rotten morals disease. Partially true: but' in my case and many other hetero-sexuals, it was like this:

A scumbag told me he didn't have any infections. For 3 months we used condoms. Then the slick New Yorker talked me into taking the condom off. Well, we had an argument; I broke up; he called my father and said "tell your daughter to go to the health department because I've had aids for 7 years. Sure enough, the next words out of my mouth were "you dirty rotten scoundrel." How dare you give this disease to me, let alone a mother with 3 kids! Needless to say our lives were never the same again. The quality of life I had planned for my children became less than "normal" and that's putting it mildly. My eldest daughter, at age 12 years, became part-time nanny and eventually it became so unbearable for her that she turned to drugs and ultimately overdosed on drugs and died. It took so many tolls on her young self. Now I'm crying the ever-ongoing continual river of tears. Thank GOD for the Open Door Clinic in Aurora and their great staff that cares so much. It's the only reason to keep me going now to finish raising my 2 teen-age boys. I almost gave up, but they gave me the hope I needed so badly to go on. I named my precious daughter "Desiree" which means "wanted, longed for" (being adopted myself, I never wanted her to ever feel "unwanted", it's the worst feeling in the world, as quoted by the late said "Sister Theresa." My "Desi" couldn't take the humiliation, the "keep it secret" stuff about her mother with now Aids anymore. But I'm going down without a fight. A fight for the right of life. I want to finish raising my 2 teen-age boys with the quality of life I originally set out to do!

We need your compassion people! Before it happens to one of you or one of your loved ones. And it will. God works in mysterious ways and I'm a Christian woman. I must wrap this up soon. "No energy" is another essay and terrible side effect, and after 15 years, I've had the disease and it really affects the immune system. Listen people, my daughter didn't deserve to die - she couldn't take anymore ridicule. Things haven't changed much since the famous "Ryan White" case years ago. Come one, we're not in the "dark ages" my brothers and sisters!! People are afraid to hug me. Imagine that. Faith cometh by hearing (in the bible). I walk in faith with Jesus on a daily basis. Maybe you all should. Example: I felt myself dying, fading away….I was admitted to the hospital. The Chaplain was even called in. It was that serious. We both prayed (where 2 shall agree in Jesus' name, so shall it be) again in the bible. One hour later, I got up and walked out of there. Set free by the blood of Jesus. If (and it's God's will) one will receive and believe. And that my friends was nothing short of a miracle! But I don't want to make God work hard for me. He has plenty bigger people to save. I was in front of 20,000 people on a video with my family on stage at the United Center with the great Evangelist Benny Hinn and my daughter and I denounced HIV and it aired in 190 nations around the world to give hope to the hopeless. Now if I can do that, can't you dig down in your soul to educate yourselves to help us with this horrendous disease? Because the "Heart of the matter is, the matter of the heart."
